After a year of anticipation, my recent getaway led me to the vibrant city of Miami. Choosing the W South Beach for my stay marked my third W experience and my second at one of their beachfront properties. Before diving into the details, it's crucial to note that Miami boasts two W hotels. This review focuses on W South Beach, a newer property with recently renovated rooms and suites, distinguishing it from the more dated W Miami.

Checkin experience

Arriving at W South Beach after a 20-minute ride from Miami International Airport (MIA), we found ourselves at the heart of the South Beach strip. Despite its more urban layout, the W South Beach impressed us from the start. We walked into a swanky-ish building and were welcomed by the signature "W" signage which was albeit quite small when compared to the other W hotels I have stayed at.

We were welcomed at the check-in counter and also upgraded to a better and larger room, their Fabulous Studio Suite. This had happened because I had written to them before our stay and they obliged thankfully. We got our Gin & Tonics while we waited for the keys and were then whisked away to our (fabulous) room.

While at the check-in we were also briefed about the daily activities which take place at the W and they were quite a handful.

Rooms

The Fabulous Studio lived up to its name, providing a cozy and chic ambiance. Bathed in natural light, the room featured pastel decor with a touch of glamour, staying true to the distinctive W style. The spacious bathroom, boasting two sinks and a sizable square tub, exceeded expectations.

Complimentary snacks, a well-stocked corner, and a generous living area added to the overall appeal. The highlight, however, was the expansive balcony offering a direct ocean view, making it our preferred lounging spot throughout the five-day stay.

The Hotel Amenities

Stepping into the hotel lobby revealed a blend of class, minimalism, and intrigue. The ambient lighting created a nightclub feel, setting the tone for the W South Beach experience. The hotel showcased a massive pool, WET bar, and cabanas available for hire. A secluded pool offered privacy for those seeking a quieter retreat. With a 2-minute walk to the beach, complete with complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas, the resort fee felt justified. Tennis courts, a fitness center, and a spa complemented the array of offerings. Weekly programming, featuring everything from fresh juices to sunglass polishing butlers, added a touch of excitement.

Dining

While Miami's food scene left much to be desired, W South Beach's dining options stood out. We tried the beachside restaurant and breakfast at the hotel, both surpassing our expectations. Though not groundbreaking, the food was a notable improvement compared to other Miami establishments.

Staff

The hotel's staff, including pool attendants, concierge, and housekeeping, contributed to an exceptional hospitality experience. Their friendliness and attention to detail, evident in interactions with the housekeeping and guest services manager, left a lasting impression. I am wary of booking at a hotel where the staff is subpar, it can make or break your stay experience, and I think this one did make a lasting impression on us.

How much did it cost me?

My stay, a Fabulous Studio Suite with an ocean-view balcony, amounted to 320K Marriott Bonvoy points and approximately $400 in resort fees. Considering the room's retail value at around $1000 per night, the deal seemed worthwhile. I accumulated most of my points by working my way up to get the sign-up bonus from my Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card and some AMEX membership rewards points. TLP Rating ★★★★☆ & 1/2

In summary, I rate W South Beach Miami 4.5 stars out of 5. Excellent service, hospitable staff, perfect location, and engaging amenities contributed to a memorable stay. While there are areas for improvement, the overall experience was commendable. Exploring Miami's culinary scene remains a challenge, so share your recommendations in the comments.
